The Obama Effect

There was an interesting news story and pilot that came out just after Obama’s inauguration speech about the increased performance of African-American students in what researchers have documented and call an “Obama effect”… showing that a performance gap between African-Americans and whites administered before Mr. Obama’s nomination all but disappeared when the exam was administered after his acceptance speech and again after the presidential election.

What does this say about the role of instilling confidence and believing in someone vs. projecting our stereotypes on another (and on ourselves)- and the implications for how we inspire or invalidate our youth (and all our relationships, for that matter)?
